My work taps into the many layers of a visual experience and the memory of it that remains.
Multilayered cityscapes and abstract expressions attempt
to preserve and convey my memory of an entire experience,
not only what I witnessed visually, but also the conversations,
sounds, smells and emotions, through texture, colour,
shadow and line. My interest in these places comes from
an undeniable presence of the energies that survive in
the air, in the structures, in the ground I walked upon.
This thickness of time I try to represent by incorporating
fragments of surfaces ravaged by centuries of weather,
decay, pollution and human friction.
The images incorporating my sculptures as subjects are
cautionary tales of human nature, visual notes to myself,
and to anyone, on hope, forgiveness, pain, love. Using
clay exploits no-one. My mind spills out, takes shape
and solidifies. Textures from related locations create
context and depth, completing the message. My hope is
to connect with people on an emotional level, help heal
some wounds, and tap into stores of positive energy along
the way.
